Longford County Council offers the Open Learning Scheme, giving employees support to undertake further education. Additionally, we offer shorter training courses to help you at work. This includes training on climate action, cybersecurity, the Irish language, minute-taking and many others. Our Performance Management Development System targets training to enhance your professional development and meet organisational needs.

Longford County Council’s ‘Dog Rehoming Campaign’ was shortlisted in the Communications category and Longford Lights Festival is up for Festival of the Year at the Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards 2023. Longford Lights has also been shortlisted in the Best Creativity in the Community category at the Business to Art Awards 2023.

Our Health and Safety team are recognised as a Consistent High Achiever at the All-Ireland Occupational Safety Awards. Our Environment team’s ‘Longford’s Green, Keep it Clean’ campaign has been shortlisted for a Pakman Award. We have also been shortlisted for the prestigious European-wide Innovation in Politics Awards.

Health and Wellbeing

Longford County Council's Health and Wellbeing team plays a pivotal role in fostering a healthy and supportive work environment for employees. 

Our Health and Wellbeing programme centres around four pillars; Mental Wellbeing, Physical Wellbeing, Social Wellbeing and Financial Wellbeing, and encompasses many diverse initiatives.

Activities include:

  • Our Employee Appreciation Day brings all employees together to celebrate one another's achievements, foster a sense of belonging and promote a culture of positive mental health.
  • Employees from across the organisation have undergone training to become 'Mental Health Champions' and promote positive mental health throughout the organisation
  • Retired employee events connecting retired employees with one another and with current employees - helping people to feel supported in their retirement and giving current employees get a chance to connect with past colleagues. 
  • Health screenings, team building, fitness challenges and participation in awareness events such as Mental Health Awareness Month
